How we review and exclude tools

Decisions we make before a tool is listed, written down so they can be argued with.

This page is the method behind the toolbox. It states the exclusion rules first, then how a listing is put together and dated.

You are here to make your writing read better. Not to fool a checker. We cannot promise what a detector will say, and we do not try.

What you get here

How a listing gets built

  1. Open the public page of the tool and record what it says it does.
  2. Check the pricing page and the privacy statement exist and are readable.
  3. Run the free part once, and note what it actually returned.
  4. Write the listing with its category, its limits, and the date checked.
  5. Re-check on the monthly cycle and update the date in the changelog.

Common questions

Why is there an exclusion list at all?

Because a directory is defined by what it refuses. Tools built around beating a checker are refused before anything else is weighed.

What does the check date mean?

It is the day someone here opened the tool and recorded the fields. It is not a guarantee that the tool is unchanged today.

Do you charge for a listing?

No. Placement is not sold. If that ever changes, the affected listing will be labelled.

Can I point out a mistake in a listing?

Yes. Corrections are welcome and are recorded in the changelog with the date.
